Early Modern Codices from the Strahov Library

In 2026, the Royal Canonry of Premonstratensians at Strahov made 21 more manuscripts from its collections available online. The vast majority of these are volumes within shelfmark section DB IV. The individual manuscripts were predominantly created in the second half of the seventeenth or in the eighteenth century and contain texts for spiritual exercises, collections of prayers and sermons, as well as formularies and other official documents. A third of the collection consists of composite volumes compiled by the Strahov canon and historian Gottfried Johann Dlabacz (shelfmarks DB IV 32, DB IV 35, DB IV 36, DB IV 37, DB IV 38, DB IV 39, DB IV 40). These comprise copies of historical documents, various scholarly treatises on history, librarianship and literary studies, as well as Dlabač’s own literary works. The digitised manuscripts also include texts produced by other Strahov canons as part of their literary activities (such as Hermann Hoffmann and Abbot Hieronymus Hirnhaim – whose tenure is also linked to the library regulations DB IV 49). A manuscript from a different shelfmark section was digitised as well: a register of George Barthold Pontanus of Breitenberg, a poet and Vicar-General of the archbishops of Prague, compiled in the course of his official duties between 1593 and 1612 (DG III 45).
