The Autograph Album of Herman von Salza

The Autograph Album of Herman von Salza

In the past year, a digital copy of the autograph album of the Silesian nobleman Herman von Salza († 1 August 1649) was made accessible online in Manuscriptorium for the first time. The original is held at the State Regional Archives in Plzeň, at the Klášter u Nepomuka branch.

Herman’s autograph album is primarily a record of his cavalier tour of Western Europe in 1619, from which 31 entries survive, most of them by compatriots from Silesian noble families. A smaller portion (11 entries) dates from the years 1626–1640, when Herman was living mostly on his family estate of Kunzendorf (today Niwnice) in Lower Silesia.

Pen-and-ink drawing depicting Herman’s famous ancestor and namesake, Hermann von Salza (†1239), the fourth Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. With this image and the accompanying text on ff. 45v–46r, the owner introduced himself to contributors and future readers of his autograph album (fol. 46r).

Our warm thanks for making the album accessible—which you can view here—go to Jakub Mírka of the State Regional Archives in Plzeň!
